Military
expenditures as a percentage of each country's gross domestic
product. This
data is taken from the CIA's The
World Factbook. Most of this data is from 2005 or 2006, and some countries, for example North Korea, are not included.
The
GDP for each country is calculated using exchange rates, not purchasing power parity (go
here for a further explanation of the difference). In these
charts countries are grouped first in terms of geopolitical
regions as defined by the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Some
of these regions are then grouped based on political similarity
(e.g., North America and Western Europe are together) or geographic
closeness (e.g., Southeastern Asia and Oceania are together) or
both.
