Federal Budget

The table below lists U.S. military and related spending for fiscal years 2006, 2007, and 2008, and estimates for 2009 and 2010. All data is taken from “Budget of the United States Government: Public Budget Database (Outlays),” a document that is available online from the Goverment Printing Office. The list was compiled by choosing all expenditures that are defense or military in nature, some of which is indirectly rather than directly military in nature. For example, the spending by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The figures in the table do not include data that is reported as offsetting receipts. Offsetting receipts are monies that are not collected on the receipt side of the budget (i.e., with the money that is collected by the government, for example, as taxes). Rather, an offsetting receipt is money that is taken in by an agency through a business-like transaction (e.g., proceeds from the sale of excess Department of Energy assets) and is then counted against outlays (the money that an agency spends). Offsetting receipts are not included in this table in order to give a clearer idea of the amount that is actually spent.

Details about how the money was spent can be seen by selecting the links in the table.
